SUPPER – It’s What’s For Brunch

Posted on by Aly

Philadelphia is quite the foodie town.  Everywhere you turn, there are restaurants that entice those passing by with delicious aromas.  Restaurants open and close quicker than a gal can change her stilettos and the newest culinary hot spot – well, that changes daily.  Often, when I ask about a certain place, I hear “Oh – that place was so last year – {Insert Blank} is the new place to be.”  However, I am not a gal to go with trends.  While liquid nitrogen can do wonders and molecular gastronomy is the newest craze, I prefer my dishes to wow me with flavors and textures of a simpler sort.

Recently, one of my fave Philly food bloggers, La Phemme Phoodie, put together quite the gathering of fellow food bloggers at South Street’s SUPPER. From their website:

Supper serves seasonal farm-direct American cuisine. We truly “cook what we like to eat.” Approachable, bold, fresh flavors with a slight twist. We take great satisfaction in presenting the foods you love to eat in a new light.

I have to appreciate any chef that actually GOES to a farm and hand picks the produce to be served.  That is exactly what their Executive Chef, Mitch Prensky does and the freshness of the ingredients shows in the dishes.  We tried a number of dishes including their Red Velvet Waffles with sweet cream cheese mousse, toasted pecans and bourbon cherries, Dixie Biscuit which had scrambled eggs, country ham and pimento cheese, and their Supper Dog which was their housemade pork shoulder dog wrapped in bacon and served with kraut, barbecued onions and beer mustard.   Everything was delish and, while you do feel a bit naughty eating something as decadent as a red velvet waffle, well – it’s brunch.  It’s allowed, right?

SUPPER has quickly become one of my favorite brunch spots and I am determined to figure out the recipe for their Pumpkin Pie French Toast.  Plus, their prices are reasonable, the atmosphere is chic and the food – well, I’ll let the Brunch Menu speak for itself. So, when your friends are pushing you to brunch at Philly’s latest and greatest “hot spot” may I suggest breaking from the crowd and heading to SUPPER.  It’s where some of my fave “phoodies” go.
