Holiday Entertaining Made Simple
The holidays are a time of festivity and merriment but, for some, it signals that one thing that could rattle even the most gracious hostess’ nerves – the holiday party. It is a time when you want everything to run like clockwork, the décor to shine and the food to be amazing. However, not everyone is Martha Stewart, armed with a glue gun, culinary training and knowledge that even the most seasoned mixologist might envy. Here are a few entertaining tips that will help you get you out of your party panic.
Planning and organization are vital to pulling off even the simplest of soirees. You should be able to prep most of the menu ahead of time and, for sanity’s sake, please do not try recipes that you have never tested before. Work with recipes that you know and make you feel like a culinary rockstar. Do not feel guilty if you don’t make everything that is served. For example, if you are not the best baker, a tray of fabulous Italian cookies and pastries from your favorite bakery is perfect.
Forget playing bartender all night – create a signature cocktail and have a pitcher of them prepared so the guests can serve themselves along with some fabulous wines, mixers and soft drinks. One thing I swear by is a fabulous sangria that always gets the conversation flowing. It is simple to prepare and my guests always love the presentation.
Candlelight always sets the tone. Lots of tealights and candles of varying heights are always elegant and, as an added plus, everyone always looks fabulous in candlelight. Also, keep it simple and do not go overboard decorating every available surface – just remember chic and sleek.
Finally, the most important lesson I learned is be a guest at your own party. You did all the planning and hard work to pull off this party and you deserve to enjoy an amazing evening with your guests.
Happy holidays!
